Study Abroad in Singapore

Through this study abroad experience, I learned that Singaporean culture is actually much more similar to American culture than I would have initially expected. Through the cultural excursions that we went on, I learned that Singaporean culture is a unique blend of Chinese, Indian, Malaysian, and Western influences. This, along with the industriousness of the Singaporean people and the successful policies implemented by the government have led to Singapore being a prosperous city state that holds wonders unlike anywhere else in the world.

Reflection

Working abroad was a bit challenging in that I had to adapt to the different communication style in Singapore which was more indirect than in the United States. As a result, I learned to pay attention more to contextual clues to understand the true meaning of what they were saying. Studying abroad has also made me more open to working international environments, as the process was much more seamless than I had initially expected. Through my exposure with different cultural norms, I have gained skills in cultural awareness and communication. Additionally, this experience has been useful for further developing my adaptability and flexibility, as there were many new situations that I had never experienced before. Looking forwards, this international experience has helped me to broaden my worldview and as a result, I now have access to many more opportunities that I would have otherwise overlooked. Additionally, I personally really enjoyed exploring Singapore and would love to come back to the region either to explore on vacation or as a place for possible future employment.
